I won't get into all that whole thing but I've got five books on leadership. I did my first one, which was called Teaching Fishing Leadership. Back then it was a little bit of a big deal. Pretty quickly within about eight years, I figured out if you're going to be famous, you got to have a book. What are the names of your book, Doug, so people can go ahead and open up their Amazon browser and start the purchase order at the moment?Īs I was telling you, I've been in this leadership consulting coaching business for many years since I left the military. I'm like, "Bring it on." Those are the kinds of stories we're going to dig into. He doesn't appreciate that sort of thing so he put a Bible on his dresser. He had an angel in his room for 3 or 4 months. I called him later and I'm like, "Are you okay? You were Air Evac to Phoenix." He was like, "What happened? Who was the woman in the back of the helicopter holding my hand the whole time?” It turns out there was no woman in the helicopter. He gets in the helicopter and an Air Evac out and he had a woman holding his hand the whole time. You're like, "What's going to happen next?" I walk up to him and his first question was, "How's my face?" I was like, "Brian's okay. My friend got plucked from the car out of the front seat. I minimize it and think, "I was in a little fender bender in an intersection." The guy was going 70. I was in a head-on car accident many years ago on July 5th. It's the gut punches in life that I’d like to get through halfway through these conversations because those are the ones that give us the character and usually become the thing in our lives that change everything. When I checked out your bio I was like, "This guy and I have some things to talk about." We'll have him explain that a little more and then another one on significance. He calls one of the books his little guidebook. I'm here with Doug Booker who probably figured out how to live a better story a long time ago because he's been at it for years with Booker Leadership. Triangles, Compasses, And God: Finding Faith With Doug Booker PM: After having written several collections, is there a difference in how you commune with the power you’re describing here? What does it look like for you as a writer when you feel disconnected from such phenomena, if at all? We have all experienced the terror of his yielding and of our own: O enjoyment of our health, surge of our faculties, egoistic affection and passion for him, he who loves us for his infinite life…” The singularity happened in poetry long ago! For me, Rimbaud’s Genie has always been the best metaphor for this poetic phenomenon: “He is love, perfect and reinvented measurement, wonderful and unforeseen reason, and eternity: machine beloved for its fatal qualities. I think that there is a point where what is made has broken off from its maker and works on an independent level. SS: That somehow (and I’m not sure how) poetry is a system of thought, feeling, and language that, when combined and written at the highest levels, knows much more than the poet and has the ability to understand the future in ways we just don’t comprehend yet. PM: I ask this question of all the poets in this series: what is the strangest thing you know to be true about the art of poetry? As the spectacular and wise Zohar poet says again and again, “come and see.” Learning is communal and should be without power dynamics-it’s a radically egalitarian proposition based on questions, asking the right ones, of course, good ones, but collectively and with an open mind. That’s why ageism in poetry is silly-we can’t have the Songs of Innocence without its opposite just the way I’m as much my students’ student as I am their teacher. “One Art” is a great poem about experience and the basic idea is that you can only learn through it as opposed to reading about it or someone telling you about it. But my philosophy is that we learn from everyone. SS: Oh, they taught me prosody and all the da-dums I needed for a lifetime! And those sound patterns get embedded even if they appear and reappear in shards and fragments-like bits of sprung rhythm. PM: In what ways are those teachers’ work, aesthetics, poetics a part of your work now? Conversely, what aspects of their teaching did you find yourself resisting as a poet starting to make poems? There are also more mystical moments from early youth that were turning points like seeing William Blake levitating over a tree in a park. I even met my husband in one of those poetry workshops. They probably don’t know this, but their classes saved me from myself! For the first time in my life, I felt like I belonged to a community, and I have lifelong friends and comrades (David Lau, the editor of Lana Turner, for example) from this era. I had three professors who changed my life: Cal Bedient, Stephen Yenser, and Harryette Mullen. I don’t know if the idea of “cleansing” that he uses is that helpful because nothing is clean, and clean things eventually get dirty anyway. When I got to UCLA, I was admitted to a succession of poetry workshops. My early life, unfortunately, was marked by a lot of chaos and abuse (and thankfully books!) I learned to focus my attention very keenly on art and writing because it was an escape and a way to feel free from my environs. I grew up in the 80s in small apartments in Los Angeles, and was raised by a single mother. SS: I was very “artsy,” and started writing poetry when I was in late elementary and early middle school. PM: Is there a moment from your childhood or youth that in some way suggests you would become a writer in adulthood? Göteborg’s Rapé is as a traditional snus with a rich heritage. When all the brands took on the round cans in the 1960s, the ones originating in the coastal town of Göteborg were given a blue labeling, to identify their links to the sea. When the newly formed AB Svenska Tobaksmonopolet relaunched in 1919, Göteborg Rapé started to be ground, as with all other brands, but the company kept the name Rapé harking back to the origins of the snus. My American friends have received dirty looks from bar maids when leaving their Goteborg’s Rapé snus can on the bar. Woman's groups have gasped in shock when seeing the cans. Over the last several years, we have been treated to forum posts about "Goat Rape" snus and other crudities. Back then, they never considered the American market. Göteborgs Rapé Lingon comes in the classic GR can. Goteborg’s Rapé isn't made that way anymore but pre-Swedish Match AB decided to keep the name for the sake of tradition. The word ‘Rapé’ comes from France and means grate or grated, which refers to the 1700s practice that originated in French society circles where people grated their tobaccos by hand to get the exact consistency they wanted. The white portion was born! Meanwhile, Unz was fired for touching the snus-making machinery and reeking of alcohol during business hours. Everyone marveled at the white color of the portion pouch and how it was dry to the touch but moist inside. A low level factory worker by the name of Axel Unz accidently turned off the water supply to the rewetting spigot while getting a glass of water. This requires an initial wetting of the portions followed by a rewetting before the portions go into the can. In fact, if it wasn't for Axel Unz, the white portion might have never been invented at all! According to people who heard this story, Goteborg’s Rapé was supposed to be produced as an original or "wet" portion snus. Goteborg’s Rapé was the world's first white portion snus, an innovation that was quickly adopted by several other brands. I wouldn't say it's terrible per say, it's definitely better than a lot of teen comedies today offering way worse inappropriate content that this one lacks - but the messages throughout are not very good. Also, a stuffed animal was used to get the raccoons’ attention and to prompt a certain look. Part of the growling effect was computer-generated. The raccoons were equipped with waist ties attached to stakes in the ground and hidden by the shirt. Trainers then remotely activated a buzzer hidden behind the actors, causing the raccoon to walk toward the actors, who screamed and ran away. The raccoon ate the food while the actors spoke their dialogue. Starring Hayden Panettiere, Paul Rust, Jack Carpenter. Food and a buzzer were hidden in the shirt, and trainers remotely activated the buzzer to get the raccoon to approach the shirt, paw at it and pick it up. The actors, who were in front of the cows, ran toward the camera, as wranglers shook food buckets and called the cows to their paddock. At the end of this scene, all of the cows suddenly charge the teens. Denis Cooverman wanted to say something really important in his high school graduation speech. The cow that the boy tried to push was placed on its mark with a soft hobble on its front and back legs, and the actor was well-rehearsed to exaggerate the pushing action, making it look like he put some muscle into it. All cows were placed on their marks and allowed to graze. The teens approach a cow that is grazing, and one boy tries to push it over, but it doesn’t budge. Cows are seen in a fenced-in field at night. Renowned filmmaker Terrence Malick is a family friend and also served as an executive producer. The interest in Lil Peep as genius rather than Lil Peep as drug addict (a title he frequently disputed) should come as no surprise given that the executive producers of the project are Liza Womack, and the CEO of his talent agency, First Access Entertainment, Sarah Stennett. Womack’s loving, beautifully penned letters to Peep, teeming with kind words and sage advice, are the emotional pulse of the film.Įverybody’s Everything focuses more on the conflict between Peep’s rising star potential and lifelong emotional anguish than on depicting his struggles with substance abuse. To collaborator and friend Ghostmane, he was “gentle” and “goofy as hell.” To his maternal grandfather Jack Womack, he was “my prophet, my tattooed poet,” according to a letter Womack wrote his grandson and reads aloud in the film’s introduction. Abundant home video footage of Gus as a sandy-haired, smiley toddler confirm his likeness to an adorable cartoon, making his torment later in life all the more devastating. To his mother, Liza Womack, he was “like the little Walt Disney characters with these big eyes, he was just like a little peep,” and thus a stage name was born. Interviews with friends, family members, and collaborators offer a piecemeal definition of what Peep was to everyone in his life-what the “everybody” and “everything” of the film’s title entails. He overdosed on Xanax and fentanyl, and his blood tested positive for cannabis, cocaine, and painkillers.Įverybody’s Everything, directed by Sebastian Jones and Ramez Silyan, provides a fleshed-out portrait not of Lil Peep, but of Gus, the anxiety-ridden teenager who got his first face tattoo in an act of resistance against the normalcy of his Long Island upbringing and wept to his grandmother about how the parents of his wealthy classmates judged him. 15, 2017 in the back of his tour bus in Tucson. Lil Peep was poised to disrupt the mainstream music scene in a big way-infusing trap beats with emo lyrics and a wholly punk attitude-when he died on Nov. The genre-blending musician, whose real name was Gustav Ahr, began uploading original music to Soundcloud from his bedroom and just two years later, he was selling out national tours and walking the runways of Paris Fashion Week. The beautifully stirring new documentary about Lil Peep’s short life, Everybody’s Everything, borrows its title from this post. His untimely death makes the next words of the caption especially chilling: “I don’t let people help me but I need help but not when I have my pills but that’s temporary one day maybe I won’t die young and I’ll be happy?” Peep holds a cigarette between two fingers with chipped red nail polish and his beautifully androgynous, tattooed face wavers in the square frame. “I want too much from people but then I don’t want anything from them at the same time.” The accompanying video is unextraordinary. “I just wana be everybody’s everything,” he wrote on November 14, 2017. Speaking on occasion, a representative for the company said, “Death of Lil Peep due to drug overdose was a tragedy and a great loss to the music scene of this century. The day before Lil Peep died of an accidental drug overdose at the age of 21 and the crest of his ascent to fame, the rapper shared an emotional message with his Instagram followers. Algorithmic quality of the standard highlight/shadow recovery is not brilliant, either, and sometimes I struggle with getting colors to look right. When it doesn’t work, you need to start digging into which combination of weirdly-named tools can undo each other sufficiently to reach the result you like. Instead of faffing with multiple modules and masks, I adjust exposure and contrast, then hit the “AI accent” and maybe “Color pop”, and be done with it. I often find Luminar’s tools great one-click solutions. This dichotomy between intuitive/easy and analytical/simple makes for a fascinating comparison. Darktable, in contrast, is all about “analytical” editing, where tools are as orthogonal and simple as possible. It provides easy tools that do many things at once towards a common goal. It goes all-in on “intuitive” tools such as the “mystic” slider. Luminar is perhaps the antithesis of Darktable. Most goals can be accomplished with most software if you know your way around them. The time required to achieve a pleasing resultĪfter having played with way too many raw developers for way too much time, there are only a few areas where the technical quality of a raw processor actually makes a difference. It would be interesting to compare Darktable’s scene-referred workflow to Luminar AI in terms of: It’s a personal choice, nothing more, nothing less. But I’m also perfectly aware that others won’t find the transition a happy one. I made my decision to move away from Adobe and couldn’t be happier. Each piece of software will have its specific types of users and fans. After that, there’s no real “winner” regardless of the points the reviewer awards to Lr or darktable. The answer to whether darktable can replace Lightroom is obvious: sure, it can. Especially because there’s no real onboarding for darktable so that’s a lot of manual reading and research needed before you know what you’re doing. It takes weeks or more often months of regular use before you start to get really comfortable with such a complex piece of software and to start appreciating (or not) all its strengths and features. I’m always really suspicious of these kinds of articles because I find it hard to believe that the reviewer has or will spend enough time with the software before writing their review. He addresses that (darktable = freeware) in the comments as trying to appeal to more readers, but yes, agreed, not good. |
